Is Linux a good platform for
document imaging?
I have been in the document imaging industry for over 30 years and have
become, at least, somewhat of an expert with the technology and how to
apply it to solve business problems.
There are relatively inexpensive document imaging solutions to many
business problems. Running document imaging on Linux will reduce the
cost of ownership even more. Since the year 2000 I have installed over
20
document imaging systems running on a Linux server. All but one of
these
systems support MSWindows desktops. The one system supports Motif
and
is working very well, it even supports two screens for data entry. All
of the systems are running today. Each of the companies that are
using Linux is extremely happy. There are three major reasons:
- Their cost to upgrade to newer versions of Linux is
negligible.
- There are very few virus, spyware and security issues.
- They do not have to reboot the server very often.
There
are very few document imaging companies that run in a true Linux server
environment. You can find them by searching "Linux document imaging" on
Google or Yahoo.
In my opinion Linux
is an excellent
platform for document imaging. If you want to get away from Windows
desktops it is the only cost effective way to go.
